security guard

I met a man today. I didn’t even know his name. I was wandering past the T hotel in J . I don’t know how we started talking. He was saying road works are not like they used to be. Work is not what it used to be. To him nothing was what it used to be. He looked at me with a bewildered look. He told me he was a security guard but he wanted to become a cleaner. He had old bones. “Things get harder in your fifties”. He looked at me. I wanted to get away from him. I put a hand on his shoulder. He wanted to know what he should do about his job. I said “apply for something on the quiet”. We parted.
