Its spring 1954. The Korean war is over and supreme leader Kim Il Sung invites East German planners, financiers and architects to rebuild North Koreas shattered economy. The result was a slew of brutalist projects culminating in the Bauhaus glories of the North Korean port of Hamhung. It paved the way for an industrial boom that saw North Korea outperform its southern neighbour and immigrants from across Asia pour into North Korea to build socialism.
