In the 1950s the Japanese government began planning to pool its scientific resources in one dedicated ‘science city’ in a bid for scientific supremacy which would turbo charge its industry. In Spring 1960 ground was broken on the so called Tsukuba Science City (previously site of a Buddhist shrine). Both governmental and corporate Japan poured trillions of yen into this scientific metropolis which would spawn some of Japan’s best innovations.
